In a landmark move reshaping North America’s energy sector, Shell has officially agreed to acquire Canadian energy firm ARC Resources for $16.4 billion, marking one of the largest oil and gas transactions in recent history. This strategic acquisition, announced in April 2026, aims to bolster Shell’s position in Alberta’s oil sands while expanding its reserves and production capabilities.

The all-cash deal, valued at $16.4 billion, includes ARC’s extensive assets in the Bakken Shale of North Dakota and Montana, as well as its operations in British Columbia’s Montney region. With this acquisition, Shell gains access to approximately 150,000 net acres of land and over 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent in reserves, significantly enhancing its long-term resource base.

ARC Resources’ CEO highlighted the strategic alignment of the deal, emphasizing Shell’s global infrastructure and operational expertise as key drivers for unlocking value. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals in Canada and the United States, with both companies aiming for completion by late 2026. Analysts suggest this move reflects Shell’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in conventional energy amid global energy transition challenges.
