South Korea is currently facing the brunt of an extraordinary monsoon season, with torrential downpours causing widespread disruption and damage across the nation. The central and southern regions have been particularly hard hit, experiencing rainfall quantities that far exceed typical seasonal averages, leading to emergency situations and significant infrastructure challenges.
Record-Breaking Rainfall in Seosan
In a dramatic illustration of the severe weather, the city of Seosan in Chungcheong Province has witnessed an astonishing 519 millimeters of accumulated rainfall in just two days (July 16th to 17th). This staggering amount surpasses the entire average rainfall for July last year (513.5mm) and represents more than a third of its annual precipitation. Very strong and heavy rain, accompanied by gales, thunder, and lightning, is expected to continue across the country until at least July 19th. Specific regions are bracing for intense downpours; the Seoul metropolitan area is predicted to receive 30-80mm from July 17th night to 18th morning, with an additional 30mm overnight into the 19th. Jeolla Province, particularly the southern coast and Jirisan area, is also under alert for substantial rainfall. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions, and follow official guidance to ensure safety amidst these extreme weather conditions.
